Ben likes to paddle in a canoe. Whether you’re in an unpowered boat like a canoe or kayak or a powered boat (a boat with a motor), wearing a life jacket is a must.

In addition to necessary items like a whistle, Ben always makes sure to bring something that floats. It could be an empty plastic jug, a beach ball or an ice chest. Throwing one of these items to a drowning person could save a life without you risking your life. If you don’t have anything that floats, use an oar, a paddle, tree branch or fishing rod (watch the hooks) to reach out to a drowning person.

In addition to knowing the waters you plan to boat, you need to be prepared for such an emergency. Boating smart is boating safety.
